About Camping Paradis au Port de l'Houmeau

At the very edge of the Atlantic, where the Charente coast turns to salt marsh and oyster beds, lies Camping au Port de l'Houmeau — the Atlantic secret that La Rochelle locals would rather keep to themselves. Between land and ocean, the four-star resort welcomes you all year round in L'Houmeau, a charming coastal village only 6 km from La Rochelle. The Camping Au Port de L'Houmeau is located at the gates of La Rochelle, in a coastal environment where rocky creeks, small beaches, and preserved natural areas alternate. You are 800 meters from the ocean and 1 km from the beach, close enough to hear the tide turn from your morning coffee. The setting is pure Charente-Maritime poetry: gentle cliffs, coastal paths, secure cycling trails, and ever-changing marine landscapes. From the campsite, you can easily reach the seaside in just a few minutes of walking. L'Houmeau itself is a delight — small shops, seaside restaurants, a village market where you buy Marennes-Oléron oysters still dripping. And then, La Rochelle. The location is a major asset. You can quickly access the historic center thanks to public transport located nearby. Ten minutes' drive and you are in the Vieux-Port, under its medieval towers, wandering cobbled streets lined with galleries and cafés. The islands are your playground: Île de Ré is just a few minutes away by car or bike via the bridge, with its green-shuttered villages, fine sandy beaches and marshland bike paths. Île d'Aix offers a car-free escape, perfect for walking or cycling. Île d'Oléron, wilder still, beckons south. Within the resort, the pleasures are perfectly paced. The water park is one of the most appreciated spaces for families. You can enjoy a friendly outdoor swimming pool, a fun paddling pool for the youngest, as well as slides adapted for shared relaxation. Add outdoor heated pool, children's club with mascot Poulpi in July-August, petanque, basketball and football fields, jacuzzi, bar, snack, restaurant, bicycle rentals, free Wi-Fi, games room, and friendly evenings organized several times a week. What to do? Cycle the Vélodyssée, hike marked trails offering beautiful marine panoramas, paddle to Nieul-sur-Mer, taste Charentais galettes and Pineau des Charentes at night markets, catch a concert on the quay. The benefit is absolute ease: authentic, rhythmically connected to sea, nature and conviviality, where everything — La Rochelle's culture, Ré's beaches, the ocean itself — is within a bike ride.

Surroundings

L'Houmeau is a coastal village with its own small harbour on the Atlantic coast, so the landscape around it is a pleasant mix of seaside and town. Gentle cliffs, coastal paths and safe cycle routes follow the changing seascapes, including the path to Port du Plomb. La Rochelle, about 5 km away, adds a lively harbour city. Île de Ré lies across the bridge, less than 5 minutes from the campsite. The Marais Poitevin regional nature park brings a green contrast. Plenty of variety for a family stay.

“Travelling with grandparents or a big group? Book a mobile home with three or four bedrooms; the range runs from one to four. Pick up your pool wristband on arrival in high season, because it gives you access and there is no deposit to pay. Mornings are best for the slides: the pool opens at 10:00, and in high season you can swim until 20:00. Hire a Dutch or electric bike at reception and follow the coastal path to Port du Plomb. Carts are available for little ones. Wake up early and collect fresh bread and pastries from the bread depot; breakfast on the terrace feels very French. After dinner at A Bon Port, stay on for karaoke, a concert or the dance party in July and August. La Rochelle is only 5 km away, and bus line 10 towards the centre is a 3 minutes' walk from the campsite. Travelling light? Bed linen can be rented from €7, and a bath kit costs €6. Duvets and pillows are already in your home. Planning to arrive late? Tell the team when you book or at reception, and they will arrange everything. Make time for Île de Ré: the bridge is less than 5 minutes away, so it works as an easy half-day trip.”
