Best time to visit Emilia-Romagna
Late May brings pleasant days of about 22°C, ideal for sightseeing in Ravenna and Bologna. June warms to about 25°C with the sea near 22.5°C, so swimming is in full swing and the days are long. July and August are the sunniest and liveliest months, with days around 29°C, a sea of about 26°C and beach clubs buzzing. September stays summery at about 24°C with a 23.5°C sea. April to June and September to October are lovely for culture and cycling.
Practical tips
- By car: from Utrecht it is about 1351 km, roughly 13 hours of driving without stops.
- By plane: Bologna is the most useful airport for the region, with Rimini airport also in the area.
- Mirabilandia: take the Cervia-Mirabilandia exit on the A14, or go by train to Ravenna or Cervia-Milano Marittima and take the summer bus from Ravenna.
- Historic centres: many Italian city centres have limited traffic zones, so park outside and walk, or take the train or bus.
- Ravenna: a combined ticket for five monuments costs €14.50, and children can join a treasure hunt among the mosaics.
- Boat trips: in the Po Delta, bring sun and rain protection, as only half of the boat is covered.
- Food to try: piadina with ham, soft cheese and rocket, tagliatelle al ragù, fresh coastal fish and Comacchio eel.
We love how Emilia-Romagna lets you have it all without moving house. Our tip: plan your culture in one go. Take the combined ticket for five monuments in Ravenna at €14.50, start with the mosaics of San Vitale and the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, and finish with the short hop to Sant'Apollinare in Classe, just 6 km south. Children can pick up a treasure hunt map with puzzles and riddles, which turns the mosaics into a game. We also adore the Po Delta. Book a boat trip from Comacchio, pack hats and a light rain jacket, and keep your eyes open for the flamingos. Kids tend to love the eel fishing demonstration. For the best balance, go in June or September: the days are about 25°C and 24°C, and the sea is a lovely 22.5°C and 23.5°C. Finish a day in Bologna with tagliatelle al ragù, the local way, and you have a perfect Italian day.
