About Spain

Spain is several holidays in one country. There are cliffs and intimate bays on the Costa Brava, kilometres of golden sand on the Costa Dorada, green meadows and big Atlantic waves in Cantabria, and Pyrenean peaks above Aragon. With around 1,200 certified campsites, from tents to camp chalets and mobile homes, every family finds its own pitch, and camping stays a wonderfully affordable alternative to a hotel, with pools, restaurants and small shops on site.

We offer eleven regions. The Costa Brava (16 campsites), the Costa Dorada (15) and Catalonia (13) are our big three, where water parks, sandy beaches and lively towns sit side by side. Costa Barcelona pairs beach life with the Catalan capital, while the Costa Blanca and the Orange Blossom Coast add more Mediterranean sunshine, palm trees and a citrus and olive orchard setting. Looking for something different? Aragon has Pyrenean mountain views and a lakeside marina at Caspe, while Cantabria, the Basque Country and Asturias bring the green Atlantic coast, and the Almeria Coast offers beach access beside Cabo de Gata nature.

Holiday food is half the fun: paella, tapas, chorizo and a jug of sangria, with traditional Catalan dishes waiting in towns such as Girona. Culture comes in all sizes. Visit Salvador Dalí's museum in Figueres and his house in Port Lligat, stroll beside the colourful houses on the River Onyar in Girona, explore the medieval Vila Vella of Tossa de Mar, or admire the Sagrada Familia and Güell Park in Barcelona. Add a little flamenco and your evenings are sorted.

Camping suits Spain perfectly. Sun and beach are on offer for most of the year, the Mediterranean is warm enough for swimming from July to September, and many of our campsites put pools, slides and the beach on your doorstep. Children splash from breakfast to sunset while parents claim the terrace. Campsites are often fully booked well in advance for the holidays, so choose your region early and secure the best spot.

Best time to visit Spain

The Mediterranean is warm enough for swimming from July to September: on the Catalan coast, days reach about 28°C in July and 29°C in August, with the sea at 23°C in July and 25°C in August. September stays lovely at 26°C by day and 23°C in the sea. May (22°C) and June (26°C) are pleasant, quieter months; choose a heated pool, for example at Homair – Camping Playa Tropicana or Camping Wecamp Pirineos. In the north, San Sebastián averages about 22°C from June to August, and the Bilbao sea reaches 21.5°C in August. Around Valencia, summer days reach about 30°C, and the sea 26°C in August. School holidays book up early, so reserve in good time.

Practical tips

  • Driving: Utrecht to Barcelona is about 1,500 km, roughly 13 hours of driving, so most families enjoy a relaxed two-day trip with an overnight stop.
  • Route: The French A9 ends at the Spanish border at Le Perthus and joins the AP-7; for San Sebastián, enter Spain at Irun and follow the AP-8.
  • Tolls: The AP-7 is the coastal toll motorway with the toll-free A-7 running alongside; the AP-8 from Irun to Bilbao is a toll road, and the A-8 beyond Bilbao is toll-free.
  • Flights to Barcelona: Flying time from Schiphol is 2 hours 16 minutes, with KLM, Transavia and Vueling; Transavia also flies from Eindhoven and Rotterdam.
  • Other airports: Girona for the Costa Brava (Ryanair from Eindhoven, Transavia from Amsterdam), Reus for the Costa Dorada and Alicante for the Costa Blanca (Ryanair from Eindhoven).
  • Food to try: Paella, tapas, chorizo and sangria, plus traditional Catalan dishes in Girona.
  • Booking: Campsites are often fully booked well in advance for holidays and public holidays, so reserve early.

Our tip: choose your region by who is coming along. With toddlers and primary-school children, we love Cambrils on the Costa Dorada for its calm, shallow water, and Blanes on the Costa Brava, where Camping La Masia sits 200 metres from S'Abanell beach. For teenagers, Salou is hard to beat: PortAventura World and Ferrari Land are close by, and Camping Resort La Siesta Salou is near the best attraction parks. Couples should look at the Costa Brava, where Girona, Dalí and the GR 92 coastal path fill the days, or at Wecamp San Sebastián for mountain, sea and city in one stay. Want a greener Atlantic holiday? Homair - Camping Playa Joyel in Noja has direct beach access and golden sands. Whatever you choose, book early, as campsites are often fully booked well in advance, and your favourite spot will be waiting for you.
