Best time to visit Costa Dorada
The Costa Dorada enjoys a calm, mild climate. May is fresh and bright, with 23°C days and a sea of about 18°C. June brings 27°C and 22°C water, which makes it a lovely month for families. July and August are the hottest, with about 30°C days and sea temperatures of 24-25°C, ideal for water parks and beach days. September stays warm at 26°C, with the sea still at 24°C. Caribe Aquatic Park is open from late May to 20 September. Spring and autumn are great for walking, cycling and birdwatching.
Practical tips
- By car: from Utrecht it is about 1604 km, roughly 16 hours of driving without stops, so plan an overnight stop on the way.
- By plane: Reus airport is about 8.4 km from Salou, around 15 minutes by taxi. Barcelona El Prat is about 85 km north of Tarragona.
- PortAventura: plan about 2 days for the theme park and a separate day for Caribe Aquatic Park.
- Ebro Delta: bring or hire a car and set out early on a bike or kayak.
- Food to try: fish and shellfish on the coast, especially in Cambrils, and grilled meats inland.
- Culture calendar: Tarraco Viva in May brings Roman Tarragona to life, and Sant Joan on 23 June is the time to see castells (human towers).
- Entry: the Tarragona Roman amphitheatre is a perfect short stop before a beach afternoon.
We love the Costa Dorada because it lets every member of the family have a different holiday and still sit down together for dinner. Our tip: give PortAventura two days, not one, and keep Caribe Aquatic Park for a separate day, since it is open from late May to 20 September. Then slow down. Spend a morning at Tarragona's Roman amphitheatre, which looks out over the sea, and finish with lunch at the harbour in Cambrils, where the seafood is the star. If your children like adventure, head to the Ebro Delta early in the day for flat cycling tracks and kayaking, with flamingos as a bonus. For couples, we suggest a day in the Priorat for wine and olive oil, or a visit to Poblet, the UNESCO Cistercian monastery. Visit in June or September for 26-27°C days and a sea of 22-24°C. And pick a campsite with a pool as well as a beach: that is the secret to happy children from breakfast to bedtime.
