Best time to visit Nouvelle-Aquitaine
May is fresh and quiet, with highs of about 20°C and a sea of 15.5°C, ideal for cycling and sightseeing. June warms to around 26°C, July reaches 27°C and August peaks at about 29°C, perfect beach weather. French school holidays run from mid-July to the end of August, when the region is at its liveliest. September is a favourite of ours: days of 24°C, a sea of 20.5°C and the driest weather of the season. Pack a sweatshirt for cooler evenings.
Practical tips
- By car: about 1093 km from Utrecht to the centre of our campsites, around 11 hours of driving without stops.
- By plane: Bordeaux-Mérignac (BOD) is the main airport; Biarritz (BIQ) suits the Basque Country, La Rochelle - Île de Ré (LRH) the islands and Bergerac (EGC) the Dordogne.
- Tolls: French motorways have péages, but no vignette is needed.
- Islands: Île de Ré and Île d'Oléron are reached by bridge or causeway, so no ferry booking is needed.
- Markets: Morning markets are a highlight in French towns, and some small-town shops pause from 12:00 to 14:00.
- Beaches: In summer, lifeguards and facilities such as toilets are usually available on popular beaches and lakes.
- Evenings: Even in midsummer a sweatshirt is handy once the sun goes down.
- Food to try: Truffles and foie gras in the Périgord, oysters on Oléron, Bordeaux wine and Cognac.
Our tip: choose your base by the holiday you want, then add one great day trip. For beach-and-forest holidays we love the Landes coast, where Camping Lou Pignada (Messanges) has car-free pines and a beach 2.5 km away, and Dune du Pilat is about 60 km from the Lit-et-Mixe area. For bikes and ice cream we head to Île de Ré, where Camping Au Val De Loire By TLC Vacances is a cycling paradise linking beaches, markets, forests and villages. Culture lovers should go to the Dordogne: climb Château de Beynac for panoramic views over the valley, then lunch in Sarlat-la-Canéda. We also love September in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, when the sea has warmed to 20.5°C, days reach 24°C and the pace is delightfully calm. Whatever you choose, pack a sweatshirt for the evenings and save an afternoon for oysters on Oléron. Our advice is to leave a few days unplanned, because the beach, the lake or the next village will usually win.
