Practical tips
- By car: Utrecht to Zadar is about 1,565 km and roughly 14 hours; Šibenik is about an hour further.
- By plane: Zadar airport is 9.7 km from Zadar's centre, a 23-minute drive, and is closest to Zaton; Split airport is about 53 km from Šibenik.
- Tolls in Croatia: no vignette, just take a ticket on entry and pay on exit; Zadar to Split is €8.10, and the coastal D8 road is toll-free.
- Slovenia: if your route crosses Slovenia, buy the vignette before the border; 7 days costs €17.50.
- Krka: enter by car at Lozovac, or take the scenic boat from Skradin; tickets are €20 in April, May and October.
- Kornati: book a one-day boat tour with the park ticket included, or a half-day speedboat trip of 4 to 5 hours.
- Currency: the euro is used everywhere in Croatia.
- Food to try: fresh seafood, local prosciutto and cheese, Brač olive oil, and Grk and Pošip wines.
We love Dalmatia for how much variety it packs into a short drive. Our tip: choose Autocamp Peros in Zaton if you want easy pool days with historic Nin around the corner, and add Zadar's sea organ at sunset, a show the kids will talk about for weeks. If waterslides are the priority, Homair - Camping Amadria Park Sibenik is your base, with Krka just 20 minutes by taxi from Šibenik. Visit Krka in May or October, when entry is €20 instead of €40 in summer. For Kornati, book a one-day boat tour with the park ticket included; it is the simplest way to see the islands, and the 4 to 5 hour speedboat version suits teenagers perfectly. For a slower, sea-first holiday, Baia Holiday Poljana on Mali Lošinj offers pristine beaches and a private marina. Finally, pack a picnic of local cheese and prosciutto, and finish the day with a glass of Pošip.
