A family holiday on the Costa Brava
Campsites by the sea on the Costa Brava
Waking up beside the Mediterranean is the Costa Brava classic: flip-flops on, towel over the shoulder, and the sea is moments away. Camping Enmar in Pineda de Mar sits directly on the sea, with palm-fringed pools and a beach just 100 m away. Camping Senia Cala Gogo Internacional offers direct beach access to a private cove, with ten pools above it. Families love how easily pool days and sea days blend together.
On holiday with your dog on the Costa Brava
The Costa Brava is a joy with a four-legged friend: pine forests, Camí de Ronda coastal paths and flat Via Verde greenways turn every morning walk into a little adventure. Wecamp Santa Cristina sits in Mediterranean forest with cycling, hiking and hidden coves on the doorstep. Camping Wecamp Cala Montgó combines pine forest, the Camí de Ronda and Cala Montgó beach. Dogs are welcome at both.

Best time to visit Costa Brava
May is fresh and peaceful, with highs of 20°C and a sea of 16°C, ideal for sightseeing. June brings 24°C and a sea of 20°C, perfect for beach days. July and August are the sunniest and liveliest months, with 28°C and a sea of 23-25°C. The second half of August has the biggest holiday buzz. September stays warm at 25°C with a sea of 23°C, and gets calmer after the 15th. Our tip: June or early September for sunshine with space to spare.
Practical tips
- By car: about 1,448 km from Utrecht, around 14 hours without stops; an overnight stop near Lyon makes it a relaxed two-day trip.
- By plane: Girona–Costa Brava airport is about half an hour from Lloret de Mar and Blanes, with buses to the coast.
- Tolls: Spain has no general motorway vignette and the AP-7 from the French border to Tarragona is free; the C-32 between Montgat and Palafolls is tolled at about €8.20.
- Barcelona day trips: foreign cars register online for the low-emission zone before driving into the city.
- Mealtimes: lunch is the main meal, with a menú del día from 13:30 to 15:30; dinner starts after 21:00.
- Shopping: small shops keep siesta hours, so plan errands for the morning.
- Tipping: 5-10% is appreciated in restaurants but never obligatory.
- Food to try: suquet de peix, fideuà, Palamós red prawns, pa amb tomàquet and crema catalana.
We love the Costa Brava because it gives every member of the family something different. Our tip: pick your campsite for the daily rhythm you want, then use the car for the extras. Choose a place with a big pool complex if your children live in their swimming costumes, or a base near a cove if you dream of quiet morning swims. We always plan one Dalí day, starting at the museum in Figueres and ending with a sunset in Cadaqués. Another favourite is a morning in Pals followed by a long lunch, because a menú del día between 13:30 and 15:30 is the best-value meal of the trip, and costs under €20. In the evening, do as the Catalans do and eat late, after 21:00, when the villages come alive. Pack bikes for the flat Via Verde greenways, and book your slot at Waterworld in Lloret de Mar for a day when the sea is cooler. Finally, try the suquet de peix at least once, as it tastes of the sea.

Frequently asked questions: Costa Brava
When is the best time for camping on the Costa Brava?
From May to September. June and early September bring about 24-25°C with a sea of 20-23°C and relaxed beaches, while July and August are the sunniest, with highs of 28°C and a sea of up to 25°C. Camping Senia Cala Gogo Internacional is a great choice for a high-summer pool and beach holiday.
How long is the drive from the Netherlands to the Costa Brava?
From Utrecht it is about 1,448 km, roughly 14 hours of driving without stops. Many families split the journey with an overnight stop near Lyon. Once in Spain, the AP-7 from the French border to Tarragona is free of tolls, so the final stretch to your campsite flows nicely.
Which Costa Brava campsites have water parks and slides?
Several of our campsites do. Camping Senia Cala Gogo Internacional has ten pools and nine slides, Camping Interpals Eco Resort has a splash pool with three slides, and Camping La Masia has two pools, splash slides and a Vulcano jacuzzi. Waterworld in Lloret de Mar is a fun day out too.
Is the Costa Brava good for young children?
Yes. Cala Montgó in L'Escala is a sheltered bay with calm water, Platja Gran in Tossa has lifeguards and a gentle slope, and L'Estartit has kilometres of shallow sand. Camping Bonavista has a children's pool with a mushroom and a fountain pool, 100 m from the beach.
Can we take our dog camping on the Costa Brava?
Absolutely. Many of our campsites welcome dogs, and the region offers pine forests, Camí de Ronda coastal paths and flat Via Verde greenways for walks. Wecamp Santa Cristina has Mediterranean forest, cycling and hiking on its doorstep, which makes it a lovely base for active families with a four-legged friend.
