About Occitanie

Occitanie stretches from the Mediterranean Sea to the peaks of the Pyrenees, with 13 departments and 220 km of coastline in between. Sun is the region's calling card: Montpellier alone enjoys about 2,670 hours a year, and summers are warmer than in most of France. Our coastal campsites, from Palavas-les-Flots to Argelès-sur-Mer, put long sandy beaches, lagoons and sea breezes on your doorstep.

Head inland and the scenery keeps changing. The Canal du Midi, UNESCO-listed since 1996, runs 240 km with 103 locks and a mostly flat towpath that is made for family bike rides or a lazy boat trip. Further north, the Aubrac plateau, the Truyère gorges, the Grands Causses around Millau and the river valleys of the Lot and the Dordogne border offer lakes, kayaking and quiet villages. In the Pyrenees, peaks above 3,000 m, waterfalls and the Cirque de Gavarnie are waiting.

This is the land of the langue d'Oc, with a proud Occitan identity and a Catalan accent around Perpignan. Walk the ramparts of Carcassonne, stroll the elegant streets of Montpellier and Toulouse, follow the Cathar castle route or marvel at the Roman Pont du Gard. At the table, expect hearty cassoulet, Roquefort and a glass of Minervois wine.

For families, the region is easy to love. Many of our campsites have their own water park with slides and heated pools, and attractions such as the Réserve Africaine de Sigean and the dinosaur museum in Esperaza add variety between beach days. Pack the car in the Netherlands, drive about 1,264 km, and a whole summer of sun, sea and adventure is waiting for you.

Best time to visit Occitanie

May is bright at about 23°C, perfect for sightseeing and cycling. June brings 27°C and sea temperatures of 19-20°C. July and August are the sunniest and warmest months, with highs of 29-30°C and the sea at 21-22°C. July is also the driest month. French school holidays run from early July to early September, when campsites buzz with clubs and entertainment. September stays warm at 25°C with the sea at about 21°C. May, June and September are our tips for a relaxed holiday.

Practical tips

  • By car: From Utrecht to our campsites it is about 1,264 km, roughly 13 hours of driving without stops.
  • Tolls: France uses per-km toll barriers instead of a vignette. Montpellier to Perpignan costs about €15.40, and the A709 around Montpellier is free.
  • By plane: Montpellier (MPL) suits the Hérault, Gard and Aude coast, Perpignan the Roussillon coast, and Toulouse the Pyrenees and the Lot.
  • Sigean and Cabrespine: Book Réserve Africaine de Sigean tickets online and reserve Gouffre Géant de Cabrespine ahead in school holidays.
  • Sea season: The Mediterranean is lovely for swimming from June to October.
  • Cathar castles: Bring plenty of water for hilltop visits in July and August.
  • Food to try: Cassoulet, Roquefort and a glass of Minervois wine.
  • Cycling: The Canal du Midi towpath is mostly flat, ideal for leisurely family rides.

We love Occitanie because one holiday holds several. Our tip: choose a coastal campsite such as Camping Le Trivoly By TLC Vacances in Torreilles, where cycle paths lead to Le Barcarès, and plan one big day out per week. Go to the Réserve Africaine de Sigean first thing in the morning for the 7.5 km drive-through safari, then explore the walking section after lunch. Book online and allow most of the day. Reserve Gouffre Géant de Cabrespine ahead in school holidays, and bring plenty of water for the Cathar castles in July and August. We also adore the Canal du Midi: hire bikes and follow the flat towpath past the locks near Béziers, then reward the kids with a slide session back at camp. If you can travel in June or September, you get warm days, a swimmable sea and a lovely, relaxed rhythm.
