This is rural France at its most characterful. Le Hameau des Genêts sits beside the Dourdou river, surrounded by the red-earth hills and wooded valleys of the Rougier de Camarès. Within 15 kilometres, expect rolling countryside, meadows, oak woodland, streams, small farming communities and dramatic viewpoints rather than busy resort scenery. Montlaur itself provides an authentic village backdrop, while Saint-Affrique adds shops, cafés and everyday services. The landscape becomes increasingly wild towards the Causses, with limestone plateaux, gorges and expansive horizons creating superb territory for walking, cycling and family road trips.

“My biggest tip for Le Hameau des Genêts is to embrace the fact that this is a small, pedestrian family village rather than a mega-resort. That is precisely why it works. The absence of cars inside the holiday area gives children unusual freedom, while parents can actually relax rather than spending the afternoon saying, “Watch out for the cars!” I would choose your chalet according to what matters most to your family. The accommodation is spread around a green, landscaped site, with some enjoying views towards the river or mini-farm. If your children love animals, being closer to the mini-farm can be a wonderful bonus. For swimming, use the covered heated pool when the weather is unpredictable and the outdoor pool when the sun appears. The pools are not enormous, so in the busiest summer weeks I would simply treat them as one part of the holiday rather than expecting a giant waterpark. Families have particularly enjoyed the mini-farm, free bicycles, sports facilities and the relaxed atmosphere. I would definitely borrow the bikes and explore the lanes around Montlaur rather than keeping the holiday entirely onsite. A car is strongly recommended here. The village is peaceful, but the best Aveyron experiences — Montaigut, Roquefort, Sylvanès and Millau — are spread across the countryside. And finally, leave room for local food. Try Roquefort, aligot and regional charcuterie rather than eating like you are still at home. You are in Aveyron, after all.”
