Best time to visit Lake Garda
May and June bring highs of 24°C to 27°C, perfect for sightseeing, cycling and Gardaland with shorter queues; the lake reaches about 20°C by late June. July and August are peak beach season, with highs around 30°C, lake water of 23°C to 25°C and lively village evenings. Join the Ferragosto fireworks on 15 August in every lakeside village. September is a favourite of ours: about 24°C, a lake still near 21°C, the Bardolino Grape Festival and a relaxed pace everywhere.
Practical tips
- By car: From Utrecht it is about 1,130 km, roughly 11 hours without stops, usually via the Brenner Pass in Austria or the Gotthard route in Switzerland.
- By plane: Verona airport is about 20 km from Peschiera del Garda, around 25 minutes by transfer.
- Tolls: The Netherlands and Germany are toll-free for cars. Austria needs a vignette (10 days €12.80) plus €12.50 for the Brenner section; buy the vignette online well before departure. Italy has motorway tolls but no vignette.
- Sirmione: The old town is a car-free zone for visitors. Park at Colombare before 9:30, or arrive by ferry from Desenzano or Peschiera.
- Ferries: Public boats link Desenzano, Sirmione, Peschiera and Garda, with about 45 sailings a day between Desenzano and Riva in summer.
- Markets (8: 00-13:00, never on Sunday): Monday Peschiera and Moniga, Tuesday Desenzano and Limone, Wednesday Lazise and San Felice, Thursday Toscolano Maderno, Friday Manerba, Saturday Valeggio.
- Shops: Most open 9:00-12:30 and 15:30-19:30, while resorts stay open until about 22:00.
- Food to try: Tortellini di Valeggio, bigoli con le sarde, grilled whitefish, risotto with tench and a glass of Lugana, Bardolino or Custoza.
We love Lake Garda for its range: swim in the morning, ride a rotating cable car to 1,760 m on Monte Baldo after lunch and still be back on the lakefront for an aperitivo. Our tip is to pair every big-park day with a slow one. Do Gardaland or Caneva Aquapark first, then give everyone a lazy lake day or a wander through the 60 ha of Parco Giardino Sigurtà. Visit Sirmione by ferry from Desenzano or Peschiera, head for the Grotte di Catullo and the thermal waters, and stay for an evening stroll when the lights come on. Check the market day in your village and stock up on tortellini di Valeggio, local olive oil and a bottle of Lugana. We also adore September: the lake is still around 21°C and Gardaland is great fun then. For young children our favourites are Camping Toscolano and Camping Bella Italia, and for families chasing slides and big-park days we point you to Camping Cisano San Vito.

Yes. Gardaland has gentle rides, Peppa Pig Land and free entry for children under 90 cm, and Caneva Aquapark has a Pirate Lagoon. Camping Toscolano has a sand-and-pebble beach with a gentle, child-friendly descent into the water, so little ones can paddle happily right from the campsite.
