About Campania

Campania is Italy at full volume: the lively streets of Naples, the lemon-scented cliffs of the Amalfi Coast, the ruins of Pompeii and the hidden beaches of Cilento, all in one sun-soaked region. With at least 250 sunny days a year around the Gulf of Salerno, it is a camping destination that works from spring to autumn.

The Sorrento Peninsula is the postcard section. From Camping Village Santa Fortunata, directly on the sea and close to the centre of Sorrento, hydrofoils reach Capri in about 25 minutes, ferries glide to Positano in 40 minutes and to Amalfi in an hour, and the Circumvesuviana train rolls to Pompeii. The Amalfi Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, delivers dramatic cliffs, colourful villages and clear water.

Head south and the mood softens. Around Paestum, three of the world's best-preserved Doric temples stand just 10 km from Paestum Camping Village, which adds a water park and a sandy beach 500 m away. Further along, Cilento is slower and quieter, with national park trails, the medieval streets of Castellabate and the sea caves of Capo Palinuro, where Residence Trivento is your base. Camping Baia Domizia lies directly on the sea with a 1,200 m private beach, between Rome, Naples and Amalfi.

Food is half the fun. Naples is the birthplace of pizza, and the region adds mozzarella di bufala, fresh seafood and colatura di alici, the anchovy essence of the fishing village of Cetara. Summers are hot and dry, the sea turns swimmable from late June, and spring and autumn bring gentle days for temples and trails. Pack sunhats, a good appetite and a love of sea views.

Best time to visit Campania

Late June to September is prime beach time: days reach 28°C in June, 31°C in July and August and 27°C in September, while the sea warms from about 22°C in June to 27°C in August. July is the driest month. April to June and September to October are quieter yet pleasant, ideal for Pompeii and Paestum, and the sea stays swimmable until mid-October. May suits sightseeing at about 24°C.

Practical tips

  • By car: Utrecht to the Amalfi Coast is about 1,800 km, so plan an overnight stop and arrive relaxed.
  • By plane: Naples Capodichino (NAP) serves the whole region and is about 60 minutes from Sorrento; Salerno Costa d'Amalfi (QSR) is about 27 km from Paestum.
  • By sea: ferries run frequently from Sorrento's Marina Piccola from April to October, with Capri in 25 minutes, Positano in 40 and Amalfi in an hour.
  • Car-free days: Capri does not admit visitors' cars, and Pompeii is an easy ride on the Circumvesuviana train from Sorrento.
  • Temples: Paestum is open daily 8:30–19:30; arrive early or late afternoon with hats and water.
  • Amalfi Coast: let ferries and the SITA bus (Amalfi to Ravello, about 25 minutes) do the driving.
  • Food to try: Neapolitan pizza, mozzarella di bufala, fresh seafood and colatura di alici from Cetara.

Our tip: use Campania's water as your road. From Camping Village Santa Fortunata we love hopping on the hydrofoil from Sorrento's Marina Piccola: Capri takes 25 minutes, Positano 40 and Amalfi about an hour. Take the SITA bus up to Ravello for its gardens and wide views, and keep one morning free for the Path of the Gods, with the sea shimmering far below. Pompeii is easy by Circumvesuviana train, and we always book it for spring or September, when the ruins are at their most comfortable. Further south, we suggest arriving at Paestum for the 8:30 opening, or in the late afternoon, when the Doric temples glow. Velia is on the same ticket as Paestum and makes a peaceful second stop. Finish the day in the water at Paestum Camping Village, with its five slides and sandy beach 500 m away. And in Naples, order your pizza where it was born. Then top it off with mozzarella di bufala another day. You will not regret it.

Do we need a car when camping in Campania?

Around Sorrento you can go car-free: hydrofoils reach Capri in 25 minutes and the Circumvesuviana train runs to Pompeii. Camping Village Santa Fortunata is perfectly placed for that. For Paestum and Cilento, a car is the easiest way to reach places like Castellabate and Palinuro.
