July and August are the heart of summer: afternoons of 28°C, sea temperatures of 24-25°C and long evenings made for pools, boat trips and gelato. Practical tips
- By car: About 1307 km from Utrecht, around 13 hours of driving without stops, via Germany, Basel, the Gotthard tunnel, Chiasso and Milan, then south towards the Ligurian coast.
- Swiss vignette: Needed for Swiss motorways is sold online, at the border and at petrol stations.
- Tolls: The Gotthard tunnel is toll-free; on Italian motorways use the lanes marked CARTE to pay by card.
- By plane: Genoa Airport is about 85 km from Albenga and about 56 minutes by car from Villanova d'Albenga; Nice Airport is about 1h21 by car from Albenga.
- On the ground: A hire car is simplest for airport transfers and hinterland villages; Albenga station has regional trains to Genoa, Savona and Ventimiglia.
- Market: Albenga's market fills Piazza del Popolo on Saturday morning.
- On foot: Dolceacqua's old town is best explored in comfortable shoes; allow two to three hours.
- Food to try: Focaccia, pesto, Vermentino, Rossese di Dolceacqua, Pigato and purple asparagus from Albenga.
Our tip: split your holiday between sea and hills, even if you never move the caravan. From Camping Delle Rose we love setting off for Dolceacqua early, crossing the humpbacked bridge Monet once painted, climbing up to the Doria castle and finishing with a glass of Rossese. Allow two to three hours on foot and wear comfortable shoes. Around Villanova d'Albenga we love the Saturday morning market in Albenga's Piazza del Popolo, followed by a lazy lunch of focaccia and a glass of Pigato. For a family highlight, book the 1.5-hour boat trip around Gallinara Island from Alassio, Laigueglia or Loano; it often includes a snorkelling stop, and the island has just one resident, the warden. Keen cyclists should try the Riviera dei Fiori path, which you can ride in a day or split into stages. Finally, plan one big day out: Genoa's Aquarium is a must with children, and Monaco is a classic for couples and teens alike. Then return to the campsite pool as the sun drops, and you have the perfect Ligurian day.
