About Lazio

Lazio wraps itself around Rome, Italy's capital, and offers far more than ancient ruins. The landscape is mostly flat and gently hilly, with small mountain areas to the east and south and lakes tucked into the hills, where Romans themselves cool off in summer. For campers that means one region with many moods: city, coast, lake and countryside, all within easy reach of each other.

Head north-west and the Etruscan coast unfolds, with sandy Tyrrhenian beaches, pine woods and the UNESCO-listed necropolises of Cerveteri, 45 km from Rome, and Tarquinia, about 90 km away. Santa Severa adds a castle and medieval village right beside the sea. Inland, Lake Bracciano is closed to motorboats, so it is made for swimming, canoeing and sailing, with a 15th-century castle watching over the water. Further north, Lake Bolsena is the largest volcanic lake in Europe.

Then there is Rome itself: the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Vatican Museums and the Pantheon. Several of our campsites sit in or right beside the capital, so you can spend the day among emperors and come home to a lagoon pool. South-east of the city, the Castelli Romani hills hide the Albano and Nemi crater lakes, old villas and the Pope's summer residence at Castel Gandolfo. Tivoli's Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este make a classic day out.

Lazio tastes as good as it looks. Try supplì, the crisp fried rice croquettes, raise a glass of Castelli Romani wine, or order Est! Est!! Est!!! in the taverns of Montefiascone. July and August bring 30 to 31°C and a sea of 25 to 26°C. Theme parks such as Rainbow MagicLand and Cinecittà World keep teenagers entertained, and the campsites keep everyone else happy.

July and August are the hottest months at 30 to 31°C, with a sea of 25 to 26°C, ideal for lagoon pools and beach days. September is a favourite: 26 to 27°C and a sea of 24°C. Practical tips

  • By car: Utrecht to our Lazio campsites is about 1621 km, roughly 16 hours without stops, so an overnight stop makes the trip relaxed.
  • By plane: Rome Fiumicino is the main airport, with routes from Amsterdam Schiphol.
  • Rome by car: the Centro Storico limited traffic zone (ZTL) runs Monday to Friday 06:30 to 18:00 and Saturday 14:00 to 18:00, so park at the campsite and enjoy the centre on foot.
  • By train: Bracciano has a train link to Rome, handy for a car-free day in the capital.
  • Etruscan sites: Cerveteri lies 45 km and Tarquinia about 90 km from Rome, and both are easiest to reach by car.
  • Ferries: Civitavecchia is the port for ferries to Sardinia.
  • Food to try: supplì, Est! Est!! Est!!! wine from Montefiascone and Castelli Romani wines.

We love Lazio because it lets you build a holiday like a menu. Our tip: pick a campsite for the mood you want, then add day trips as courses. Fancy history with a beach finish? Stay at Camping Club Degli Amici, walk 150 m through the pines and over the wooden bridge to the sand, and spend a morning among the Etruscan tombs of Cerveteri, 45 km from Rome. Want city and pool in one? Camping hu Fabulous Village and Camping Baia Holiday Roma Capitol put you close to Rome, with lagoon pools waiting after a day at the Colosseum. Our other tip is to treat Rome as a morning mission: go early, see the big sights on foot, and keep the afternoon for the pool. Lake Bracciano is our favourite quiet day out, with swimming, canoeing and sailing beneath the castle, and a train link to Rome. Finish any day with supplì and a glass of Castelli Romani wine. It is the easiest way to taste Lazio.
