About Italy

Italy is a camping holiday with plenty of plot twists. Snow-capped Dolomite peaks, 18 of them above 3,000 metres, give way to Tuscan vineyards, Alpine lakes and Sicilian orange groves. The longest coastline in Europe is washed by five seas (Mediterranean, Adriatic, Ionian, Tyrrhenian and Ligurian), and Lakes Garda, Como and Maggiore add shimmering blue in the north. Every region has its own food, architecture and even language.

We offer 110 campsites across 17 regions. Tuscany (23 campsites) is the biggest choice, with pine forests near Viareggio plus the Maremma and Etruscan coasts. Emilia-Romagna brings the Riviera Romagnola and Cesenatico waterparks, plus flamingos in the Po Delta. Lake Garda, 51 km long and close to Gardaland, suits every age, while Veneto lines the Adriatic with beaches at Caorle, Eraclea Mare and Rosolina Mare. Lazio puts Rome within reach, Sardinia adds island hopping from Palau, and Sicily offers Mount Etna and the coast around San Vito Lo Capo. Apulia, Campania, Trentino/South Tyrol, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Abruzzo, Calabria, Liguria, Piedmont, The Marches and Umbria/Lake Trasimeno complete the map.

Then there is the food. Pizza was born in Naples, and pasta, focaccia, carbonara, pesto and gelato turn up wherever you pitch your tent. Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano keep Tuscany's wine lists impressive, while Emilia-Romagna is renowned for its food tradition. Between meals, Rome, Florence, Venice and Pompeii supply history by the bucketful, and Tuscany's Val d'Orcia landscape is a World Heritage Site.

That is exactly why Italy is perfect for camping. Many of our campsites come with lagoon pools, waterparks, slides and private beaches, so children are happy from the first morning. Couples can slip away to a spa, a lakeside beach or a wine road, and teenagers can swap pool time for a day in Rome or at Gardaland. Pitch up, unpack and let the Italian sunshine do the rest.

Best time to visit Italy

May is perfect for sightseeing, with highs of 22°C in Venice, 23°C in Verona and Bologna, and 24°C in Florence, Rome and Lecce. From June to August the north reaches about 30°C, while the south turns up the heat even more, with Apulia regularly hitting 38°C in August: ideal for long pool days. The liveliest weeks run from 1 to 20 August, with the peak around Ferragosto on 15 August, so book early. September stays at about 25°C and is a relaxed month for the beach. For a quieter Ferragosto, head for the Maremma in Tuscany or Salento in Apulia.

Practical tips

  • Driving: Most families from the Netherlands travel via Germany, Innsbruck and the Brenner Pass, then on past Bolzano and Trento towards Lake Garda.
  • Tolls and vignettes: Austria needs a vignette (€12.80 for 10 days, no extra one for a caravan), the Brenner motorway adds €12.50 per trip and Italy charges tolls per section. Via Switzerland you need a CHF 40 vignette.
  • Flights: Schiphol flies direct to Rome Fiumicino (about 2h20), Venice Marco Polo (about 1h56) and Milan Linate (about 1h39). Ryanair flies from Eindhoven to Pisa, Bologna and Brindisi, and Transavia flies Amsterdam to Olbia for Sardinia.
  • Old town centres: Florence, Pisa, Lucca, Siena, Verona and Rome have limited traffic zones with automatic fines from €80. Leave the car at the campsite and go by bus or train.
  • Ferragosto: Around 15 August many small shops and family-run restaurants close for the holiday, while tourist-area restaurants, beaches and major museums stay open.
  • Booking: Mid-August is the busiest time, so reserve early for the week you want.
  • Food to try: Neapolitan pizza, pasta, focaccia, carbonara, pesto and gelato everywhere, plus Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino in Tuscany.

Our advice starts with one question: who is coming along? For families with young children we love Veneto and Emilia-Romagna, where big waterparks sit right by the Adriatic beach, and Camping hu Eraclea Mare is a favourite of ours. Travelling with a mix of ages? Our tip is Lake Garda: Gardaland for the teenagers, lake swims for everyone and Verona just 30 minutes away. Couples should look at Tuscany. Camping Club Del Sole Viareggio Family Collection combines pine forest and beach with Pisa and Lucca, and we always suggest a day among the vineyards of Chianti. Teenagers who love city life will adore Lazio and Rome. If you want a real island adventure, choose Sardinia; for volcano views and sea-cliff swims, head to Sicily. Whatever you pick, book early for mid-August, and leave the car at the campsite when you visit old town centres. Buses and trains are far more relaxing, and you skip the limited traffic zone fines.
