About The Marches

The Marches is the only Italian region with a plural name, and it lives up to it: this is several holidays in one. There is a coast of white-pebble beaches and friendly seaside towns, rolling hills of vines and olive groves, hilltop villages and, further inland, the Sibillini Mountains. It is a region of truffles, grapes and medieval streets, and it feels wonderfully unhurried. Much of it, especially inland, is still relatively undiscovered.

Both our campsites are in Porto Sant'Elpidio, in the province of Fermo, with the Adriatic on the doorstep. From here the Conero Riviera is about 33 km away. Numana and Sirolo sit inside Monte Conero Park, with bays, boat trips and a viewpoint over San Michele beach. More than 20 beaches in the region fly the Blue Flag, so a new swimming spot is never far away.

Culture is easy to add to a beach holiday. Urbino's Ducal Palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to the National Gallery of the Marche. Loreto draws pilgrims to the Holy House of the Virgin Mary, and Recanati is the town that inspired the poet Giacomo Leopardi. The region has given the world Raphael, Rossini and Maria Montessori, and 32 of its villages are listed among the most beautiful in Italy. For a change of scene, Frasassi Caves offer a cool 75-minute underground walk, and the village of Camerano is famous for its caves.

The table is just as rewarding. Try brodetto, the Adriatic fish stew that is cooked a little differently in every town, shave truffles over your pasta and pour a glass of Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi. The region counts 12 DOC and 2 DOCG wines. Come back to your campsite for a swim, and the day is complete.

Best time to visit The Marches

June to September is the sweet spot. In May the air reaches about 21°C and the sea about 18°C, ideal for walks and sightseeing. June brings about 26°C and sea water near 23°C, with quiet, sunny days. July and August are the warmest, at about 28°C with sea temperatures around 25°C and just 3 rainy days in July. They are also the liveliest weeks of the season. September stays summery at about 24°C, with sea water of about 24°C, so the Adriatic is still perfect for swimming.

Practical tips

  • By car: Ancona is about 1,450 km from Schiphol by road, roughly 14 h 30 min, and the campsites are about 51 km from Ancona.
  • By plane: Ancona Raffaello Sanzio (AOI) is the region's airport, about 38 minutes from the campsites, with connections via Munich, Milan or Rome and Wizz Air from Eindhoven.
  • Other airports: Bologna is about 2 h 15 min from Ancona, and Rome Fiumicino has daily flights to Amsterdam.
  • By train: a direct train runs hourly from Porto Sant'Elpidio to Ancona and takes about 45 minutes.
  • Excursions: a car makes inland trips such as Frasassi Caves easy, and a free shuttle bus runs from the car park to the cave entrance.
  • Caves: it is a constant 14°C inside Frasassi, so bring a jumper and book ahead in July and August.
  • Food to try: brodetto fish stew, truffles and Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi.

We love the Marches for how much variety fits into one holiday, and our tip is to build your week around a few favourite days. Spend one at the Conero Riviera, about 33 km from your campsite: stroll up to Sirolo's central square for the view over San Michele beach, then hop on a boat from Numana to Due Sorelle, a beach you can only reach by sea. With small children, try La Spiaggiola, a sheltered cove with fine gravel. Give another day to culture: Urbino's Ducal Palace is worth the trip, and a guided tour takes about 2 hours. On a hot afternoon, Frasassi Caves are a cool 14°C, so bring jumpers. Then come back to Camping Club Del Sole Le Mimose Family Resort or Club Del Sole La Risacca Family Collection for a swim at your private Adriatic beach and a plate of brodetto. Teenagers will want the slides at La Risacca, while couples will love the sea-view pool at Le Mimose. In the Marches there is always one more bay to discover.
