About Catalonia

Catalonia packs a whole holiday map into one corner of Spain. In the north, the Costa Brava stretches for about 200 km from Portbou to Blanes, a rugged ribbon of beaches and coves tucked between cliffs, with pine forests tumbling down to the water and whitewashed villages dotted along the way. Blanes lies roughly 75 km north of Barcelona, so big-city buzz and seaside calm sit comfortably close together.

Nature is never far away. Protected areas include Cap de Creus, the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà wetlands, the Montgrí massif and the Medes Islands, where snorkellers meet coral and shoals of fish. The Camí de Ronda coastal path links towns and coves for walks with sea views. Head south and you reach Sitges and the Garraf Nature Park, or the Ebro Delta at L'Ampolla. Turn inland and the Catalan Pyrenees rise around Pedraforca mountain, perfect for hiking and fresh mountain air.

Culture comes in generous portions. Explore the Graeco-Roman ruins at Empúries, the medieval villages of Pals and Peratallada, Girona's Jewish quarter and Dalí's surrealist legacy around Figueres. Fishing villages such as Cadaqués and Calella de Palafrugell keep things laid-back, while Lloret de Mar and Platja d'Aro bring shopping and a livelier evening scene. Tables are laden with Mediterranean cuisine and locally sourced ingredients, including seafood fresh from the day's catch.

For families, Catalonia delivers on every level: water parks such as Water World in Lloret de Mar and Aquabrava in Roses, calm coves for small swimmers, and campsites with pools, slides and beaches close by. From Utrecht it is about 1478 km, around 14 hours behind the wheel without stops, and the airports of Barcelona and Girona make flying easy too.

Couples can balance culture and calm in Catalonia. The Camí de Ronda links towns and coves for long coastal walks. Catalonia shines from May to October. May brings about 20°C with the sea at 16°C, ideal for hiking and sightseeing. June warms to 24°C and the sea reaches 20°C. July and August are the classic beach months, with 28°C days and sea temperatures of 23°C and 25°C. The second half of August is the liveliest time, with a real holiday buzz. September stays warm at 25°C with the sea at 23°C, and beaches turn calmer after the 15th. October still offers 18-22°C days.

Practical tips

  • By car: From Utrecht it is about 1478 km, around 14 hours driving without stops, so a stopover makes a relaxed trip.
  • By plane: Barcelona-El Prat has the widest choice of flights, while Girona-Costa Brava airport lies 13 km outside Girona and suits the northern coast.
  • Airport transfer: A bus runs from Girona airport to Barcelona Estació del Nord in about 1 h 15 min, and Girona to Barcelona is about 90 km by road.
  • Tolls: The AP-7 from La Jonquera down the coast has been toll-free since 1 September 2021, and Barcelona to La Jonquera is about 150 km.
  • Regional roads: The C-32 and C-16 charge tolls, and the Cadí tunnel costs about €13 on the way to Pedraforca. Use a tag with the Via-T logo.
  • Food to try: Fresh seafood and Mediterranean cuisine made with local ingredients.
  • Fiesta days: 24 June (Sant Joan), 15 August (Assumption) and 11 September (Catalan National Day) are public holidays with a festive mood.

We love Catalonia because one booking gives you several holidays. Our tip: start with a beach week on the Costa Brava and stay at Homair - Camping Castell Montgri in Estartit, with three pools, waterslides and panoramic views. From there, book a family snorkelling tour to the Medes Islands, where the kids spot coral and shoals of fish. Pick one day for Water World in Lloret de Mar, pack flip-flops because the ground can be hot and slippery, and ask about the family pass. Spend a morning at Empúries to give the history lovers their moment, then drive to Figueres for Dalí and the Toy Museum. We also adore May and September, when days are warm and the beaches feel relaxed, and the Camí de Ronda is perfect for an evening stroll. Coming for two weeks? Finish in the Pyrenees at Wecamp Camping Repos de Pedraforca, where heated pools wait beneath the mountain after a day of hiking.
