This is a traditional 4-star family campsite with a particularly attractive trump card: direct access to the beach. No car, no complicated directions, no “are we nearly there yet?” – just follow the private access through the dunes. The beach is ideal for paddling, rock-pooling and coastal walks, with the sea changing character beautifully with the tides. And when the family wants pool time? The aquatic area has a covered heated pool at around 28°C, outdoor pools, waterslides, a children's paddling pool with water games and a solarium. Add a restaurant and bar, takeaway food, grocery shop, bakery, laundry, playground, multisports court, pétanque, table tennis, bike hire and seasonal entertainment, and you have a very useful holiday base. Surroundings

Le Suroît enjoys a superb position on western Île d’Oléron, surrounded by dunes, pine woodland and the wide Atlantic. Within 15 kilometres, the scenery shifts beautifully between sandy beaches, rocky foreshore, salt marshes, oyster beds, woodland tracks and gently cultivated island countryside. The nearby villages add a more human landscape, with whitewashed houses, markets, cafés, cycle paths and small harbours. Saint-Pierre-d’Oléron provides the island’s principal shopping and services, while La Cotinière brings colourful fishing boats and seafood restaurants. It is an easy-going Atlantic landscape where nature, villages and sea views constantly compete for attention.

“My first tip is to check the tides before planning your beach day. The coastline immediately outside Le Suroît is wonderfully atmospheric, but the character of the beach changes considerably between high and low tide. Low tide is excellent for exploring rocks and rock pools with children, while high tide brings the proper Atlantic swimming experience. We would also put bicycles very high on your packing list. Oléron is made for cycling, and the campsite's position gives you an excellent starting point. If bringing bikes is impractical, arrange rental early in your stay. It is one of the easiest ways to reach markets, beaches and neighbouring villages without repeatedly moving the car. For families, don't automatically head to the beach every morning. The pool and slides are a great alternative, particularly for younger children, and the covered heated pool gives you a useful option when the Atlantic weather turns a little moody. If you enjoy seafood, make time for La Cotinière. The fishing port is one of the island's culinary highlights, and this is exactly the sort of place where you should arrive hungry. Another useful trick is to use the campsite shop for bread and forgotten essentials, but do your larger supermarket shop in Saint-Pierre-d’Oléron. Finally, leave one completely free day. No timetable, no ambitious excursion – just bicycles, beach, an ice cream and perhaps some oyster tasting for the adults. The charm of Le Suroît is its combination of simple camping, nature and sea access, so let the island set the pace.”
