Gaia Ecolodge lies in the gently rolling countryside of the Dordogne, surrounded by wooded hills, meadows, small valleys and quiet country lanes. The 13-hectare estate includes a three-hectare private fishing pond, creating a particularly tranquil waterside setting. Around Douville, woodland and agricultural landscapes dominate, with walking and cycling opportunities through the Périgord countryside. The landscape gradually opens towards the Bergerac vineyards and Dordogne valley, while villages such as Villamblard and surrounding historic estates add character to the rural scenery.

“My first tip is simple: allow yourself some time to enjoy Gaia Ecolodge itself. This is not a property where you need to fill every day with excursions. The three-hectare pond is the heart of the estate, and the peaceful setting is one of its biggest advantages. Fishing is permitted on a no-kill basis, with carp, roach, pike and black bass in the water. Guests do not need a fishing licence because the pond is private, although the campsite requires appropriate fish-care equipment and barbless hooks. For families, I would choose accommodation with a pond view wherever available. The mobile homes and chalets are integrated into the landscape, and the terraces make particularly pleasant places for breakfast or an evening drink. Do not overlook the smaller facilities either. A game of mini-golf, tennis, pétanque or table tennis can easily become the highlight of an afternoon. The playground gives younger children somewhere to burn off energy, while the bar and snack terrace provide an easy place for parents to relax. The swimming pool is another good reason to spend part of the day on site. There is a main outdoor pool and paddling pool, with loungers and shaded areas. Finally, take advantage of the location. Bergerac is close enough for an easy outing, while Périgueux, the Périgord Noir, prehistoric caves, castles and Dordogne villages give you plenty of reasons to venture further afield. The best Gaia holiday, in my view, combines slow mornings at the pond with one well-chosen excursion each day.”
