Best time to visit Kefalonia
The Sweet Spots: May-June and September to early October Late May - June: My favourite for most people Weather: 24-28°C, sea is swimmable from late May (22°C+), long sunny days. Crowds: Beaches have space, restaurants have tables, no queues for Melissani Cave. Nature: Everything is still green, wildflowers on Mount Ainos, perfect for hiking and boating. Price: 30% less than August. September - early October: Best for adults Weather: 25-27°C in September, sea is at its warmest (25°C). Still beach weather till Oct 10th. Crowds: Families gone after first week of September. Fiskardo and Assos are blissfully calm but still buzzing. Why: Best light for photography, best wine harvest season, water is crystal after summer winds settle. High Summer: July - August Weather: 30-35°C, very hot, sea like a bath (26°C). Can be humid in Argostoli. Crowds: Peak. Myrtos, Antisamos and Fiskardo are busy 11am-4pm. You must book villas, cars and private boats 3-4 months ahead. Good for: If you want full nightlife in Fiskardo, all beach bars open, and you love hot, guaranteed sun. For families who can only travel in school holidays, it still works — just stay near sandy beaches like Lassi or Skala and do everything early. Shoulder & Off-Season April: Beautiful and green, 19-22°C, wildflowers everywhere. Great for hiking and Easter celebrations. Too cool for most to swim, many hotels and tavernas in the north still closed. Late October - March: Very quiet. Most beach resorts close. Argostoli stays open but it's a local winter. Not a beach holiday, but great for writers, walkers and total escape. Many flights stop. Quick Guide By Traveller Couples / Honeymoon: Early June or mid-September Families with young kids: Early June or early September — warm sea, less heat Families with teens: July for buzz, but late June is smarter Sailing / Boating: May to October, calmest seas are September Best photos / Instagram: May and September — lower sun, no haze
Practical tips
- Getting There & Around
- Airport: Kefalonia International (EFL) near Argostoli. 10 mins to Lassi, 45 mins to Fiskardo. Small airport, bags are slow in August.
- Flights: Direct from most of Europe May-October. If no direct, fly to Athens then 1-hour domestic hop.
- Car is non-negotiable. No Uber, few taxis, buses are rare. Book a small automatic 3-4 months ahead for July/August — the island literally runs out. Request a child seat at booking.
- Driving: Roads are good but narrow and winding in the north. Drive slowly, especially at night — goats. Fill up when you see a station, they are sparse in the north-west.
- Ferries: Handy for island hopping. Kefalonia to Ithaca is 30 mins, to Lefkada via Fiskardo is 1 hour.
- Money, Shops & Time
- Cash: Euros. Cards work in Argostoli, Fiskardo and big tavernas, but bring cash for mountain villages, small boats and beach cantinas. ATMs in every main village.
- Shops close for siesta: 2pm - 5:30pm most shops, bakeries and pharmacies close. Supermarkets in Lassi and Argostoli stay open.
- Sunday: Almost everything closed except tavernas and mini-markets.
- Staying Comfortable
- Water: Tap water is safe but heavily mineralized. Buy bottled for drinking — everyone does.
- Sun is strong: Even in June. The white pebbles reflect UV. Bring high SPF, beach shoes (pebbles are hot) and a rash vest for kids.
- Mosquitoes: Light in the north, more in the south near lagoons in August. A small repellent is enough.
- Pharmacy & Hospital: Excellent pharmacies everywhere. Main hospital is in Argostoli, plus medical centers in Sami and Lixouri.
- Packing Smart
- Beach shoes or sturdy sandals — not just flip-flops
- Light jacket for Drogarati Cave and Mount Ainos evenings
- Dry bag for boat days — keeps phones safe
- EU adapter — same as Netherlands
- Small cooler bag — perfect for taking water and fruit to remote beaches
- Connectivity
- EU roaming works everywhere, 4G is good in towns, patchy in mountain roads. Most villas and tavernas have fast WiFi.
- One last tip: Download offline Google Maps of Kefalonia before you go. Signage for small beaches like Fteri, Dafnoudi and Alaties is tiny and easy to miss.
Rent a small car, always. The best beaches and tavernas are not on the bus route. A small car is essential, and book it 3 months ahead for July/August — the island runs out. Do Myrtos right. Go before 10am or after 5pm. Midday the sun is directly overhead and bleaches the water in photos. Sunset from above is spectacular, but swimming is better in the morning when it's calm. Book Melissani for opening. Be there at 9am when the boats start. By 11am there are queues of 45 minutes in summer. The light is best between 11am-1pm, but that first quiet row is worth it. Stay in two bases. Don't try to do the whole island from one spot. Split it: 3-4 nights in the south near Argostoli / Lassi for Xi and beaches, then 3-4 nights north near Fiskardo / Assos for the best villages and boat trips. It saves hours of driving. Take a private boat, not a big tour. A half-day skipper from Fiskardo or Agia Efimia is around €300-€400 split between you and lets you reach white coves like White Rocks and Fteri that big boats can't access. Eat where locals eat. Skip waterfront menus with photos. Look for kreatopita, bourbourelia soup, and grilled octopus. For Robola wine, go to Gentilini or Divino wineries — cooler mountain vineyards, much better than supermarket bottles. Respect the siesta. Shops and pharmacies close 2pm-5:30pm. Plan your fuel, water and supermarket runs for morning. And carry cash for small tavernas in mountain villages.
